I'll be seeing ya

Hello Food Truck Foodies!

I know it's been ages since I've been able to post but this blog is to explain everything.

I've started a new job recently and for that reason I have been unable to visit trucks or write new posts. I work at least 50 hours a week and I am too exhausted to leave my house on my days off. I guess being a grown up and having a real job isn't all fun and games.

I've decided to take a break from writing to focus on my new job.

I do now want to continue this blog or my twitter without giving it 110% and I know that I haven't been doing that lately. I hope one day soon I will be able to continue writing but for now I am so focused on learning at my new job.

I will continue to check my email- houstonfoodtruckfoodie@yahoo.com if anyone has any questions or would like me to help their food truck. I just won't be writing new blogs or checking my twitter as often.

Thank y'all so much for reading my blog and I hope in a month or 2 I will be back and better than EVER!!

and I'm off. . .

Hello Food truck foodies!

It's that time of year again. Break out the passports, dust off the suitcases and get ready to go on vacation!

The last month has been so hectic for me. If you follow me on twitter you know that I've been traveling A LOT-San Antonio, College Station and now CALIFORNIA.

That's why I've been so MIA lately. Traveling really filled up my calendar.

But even MORE exciting than that...I GRADUATED!!

I am now a proud alumni of the University of Houston-The best freaking university in the entire world! OK maybe not but for me it was the best 4 years of my life. Graduating was very surreal and I will never forget that day. Some of it was really boring. I had to wait around for 2 hours for lineup that really only took 20 minutes and I had to sit through 1000 other names being called. Thank god I had angry birds on my phone! HA HA! But thanks for sticking around during my down time but my next blog will be worth the wait!

I'm going to California for a week-San Diego, Los Angeles & San Francisco. I'd really like to sample some food trucks from there so if you have any suggestions please let me know.

Tweet me @htownfoodtruck
Email me at houstonfoodtruckfoodie@yahoo.com

I hope to try 2 or 3 trucks while I'm there. I know the food truck scene out there is really fun and fast paced so I'm excited to see what is out there!

Talk to you soon!

Food Truck Orgy

So I admit it...I cheated on my "no yummy food" diet but I swear I have a good reason!

Food truck heaven took place at the University of Houston UC. I have never been so happy to stuff my face.

The Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship holds a festival every year. It was started to provide real-world scenarios for students to learn what it really takes to start a business. This year, Wolffest was April 17-19th. They had games, moonwalks,  a dunking booth and most importantly...Food Trucks!

As I logged on to my twitter @htownfoodtruck this past Tuesday morning I was greeted with a welcome surprise.  Food truck after food truck was tweeting "We'll be at the UC at UH today! Come on out!". I literally fell out of my chair reading this. Just picture me in class having a mild freak out.

I was not able to make it to the UC on Tuesday due to back to back classes from 10am-6:30pm. I know what you're thinking...that's insane but I digress. Wednesday there was a total of 6 food trucks parked at the UC...SIX! My stomach was very happy thinking about what was about to happen.

My first stop was Oh My Gogi! and right when they opened at 10am there was a line of about 30 people. Don't believe me?

This was the scene at 10 in the morning! Most college students are barely crawling out of bed with their hangovers at this time. This made me even more excited to jump in line.

As I waited in line I was looking around and I saw a man holding a sign right by where the food trucks were lining up. I didn't think much of it at first.  I thought he was holding up a menu for one of the food trucks but then I looked a little bit closer.

Now I'm not one to judge unlike this man, but does he not realize where he is?  The first person he says is going to hell is "drunks". Sir you are on a college campus. Every person you hand one of your "Jesus" flyers to is either hungover or going to get drunk in the next 24 hours. THIS IS A COLLEGE CAMPUS!!! I'm going to keep my religious and political views out of this but really this was just annoying. UHPD actually did something for once and asked the man to leave.

I got to the front of the line at Oh My Gogi and I was torn looking at the menu.

I decided on the OMG Fries with beef short ribs because I was about to eat at 5 different food trucks. That and because I saw almost every single person leaving the truck with those fries and they looked GOOD!

The guys at Oh My Gogi were so nice and more importantly they had a clever tip jar. I mean c'mon...how could I not leave them a tip with that sign? It took only 2 minutes for the fries to be ready. After waiting about 30 minutes in line the food was a welcome sight.

There's so much cheese that you can barely see the fries peeking out. Anything covered in that much cheese is going to be DUHHLICIOUS. If you don't like spicy food then don't forget to ask for these without sriracha. These fries cleared my sinus' right up! Cheesy, spicy, meaty- Put these adjectives in front of anything and it's gonna be good.

My next stop was Coreanos, an Austin based food truck that has finally made it's way to the best city in Texas!

Coreanos food is "Mexican cuisine with Korean in-between". The menu has dishes such as Korean BBQ tacos and burritos, quesadillas, fries and the most delicious thing I've ever heard of, BACON WRAPPED HOTDOGS!

My stomach started growling when I read that, my heart also hurt a little bit. I decided on the Korean BBQ tacos with short ribs, korean slaw, onion, cilantro and sesame oil vinaigrette.

Isn't that taco a thing of beauty? The short ribs were tender, the slaw gave it the right amount of crunch and let's talk about this vinaigrette. Tangy and a little bit spicy, I could have eaten 5 of these tacos. Perfection.

Next time I stop at Coreanos I am definitely going to try their LA hotdog. I had to eat at 6
different food trucks in one day so I had to pace myself.

My next stop was the one, the only...SASHA! Phamily Bites specializes in Vietnamese cuisine including banh mi and pho.

I think that their most famous dish is The Vandalizer- Tender Filet Mignon chunks served on a fresh baked VN baguette, garnished with fresh homemade VN mayonnaise, pickled red onions, fresh watercress greens, grilled jalapeƱos, all drizzled with a salt and pepper lemon juice. That description came right from Phamily Bites website and it sounds amazing just reading it. I knew that's what I had to get.

Look at those delicious pickled onions peeking out of the sandwich. You wanna see what the inside looks like?

You can stop licking your screen now.

The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful. The pickled onions and watercress lightened up the richness of the meat and the creamy mayo brought it all together. The grilled jalapenos gave it just the right amount of heat without overpowering the sandwich. I have been Vandalized and I love it.

At this point I'm getting really full and I have 2 more food trucks to go...I really feel like I should get a medal for this.

As I made my way to my next food truck I passed by Bernie's Burger Bus. You have no idea how hard it is to pass up a truck that you know has truffle parmesan fries inside of it *sigh* I'll come back for you fries...I promise <3

Anyways, my next stop was the Bang Mi Truck. Now I know what you're thinking, "Oh my! How dirty!" It is and I love it.

The Bang Mi Truck has, you guessed it, banh mi sandwiches. Since I had just eaten the Vandalizer I decided to get a grilled chicken banh mi. It came with all of the usual banh mi fixings-cilantro, shredded carrot, jalapeno & cucumber.

YUM

I loved the carrots and cucumber in this. They were slightly sweet, crunchy and light which was perfect because I had been in the sun all day. The chicken was tender and full of flavor. A different banh mi from the Vandalizer but equally as delicious.

Just when I thought I was done stuffing my face for the day I see this...

I mean how do you say no to ice cream? Sweet Ride Houston has just what college kids need...sugar. They have almost every sweet frozen treat you can think of- Sorbet, Italian Ice, Snow cones and Ice Cream bombs. I wanted to try their specialty so I decided on an Amaretto Ice Cream bomb.

I love amaretto and this ice cream bomb was made with amaretto ice cream and it's covered in mini chocolate chips and pecans. I might be a little picky with this but I would have liked the ice cream to be covered in almonds since amaretto is an almond flavored liquor but it was still really good. Next time I want to try the snow cone from Sweet Ride. I saw so many people walking around with Texas sized snow cones and I got a little bit jealous even though my stomach was about to pop.

After my food filled day I retreated back home where I collapsed on the couch in a food coma, only to be woken for class.

The next morning I went to school thinking, "I went to all the food trucks so today I can just stay at my college and do homework", but no. I logged back onto my twitter and I see The Modular tweet that they are on campus. I knew I shouldn't have eaten breakfast.

As soon as my class let out I walked across the street to the UC and found The Modular. I had kept seeing tweets saying "The college kids are afraid of Sir Rams A-Lot" and "A girl just said we were too ugly to eat from". How can you be afraid of The Modular? They have kobe beef! I'd walk through a dark alley past a crack house for some kobe beef.

Just look at Sir Rams-A-Lot, he's adorable. How could you not love that face? He says he loves you right on the sign.

It really bugs me that some girl said that the truck is "too ugly to eat from". Who do you think you are? I'm pretty sure someone has said the same thing about you honey *rimshot*

When it comes to restaurants you can't judge a book by it's cover. Some of the best food comes from hole in the wall restaurants and some of the best food comes from The Modular.

I decided on the Kobe beef sausage on a bun for 2 reason: 1) I love sausage and mustard together, 2) I am not a fan of crab.

I know, I know...As a "food critic" I have to love everything but I've tried a lot of times to like crab and each time has failed.

You know when you go to the rodeo and you order sausage on a stick with yellow mustard? This was SOOOO much better. This was the best sausage I've ever had. (Get your mind out of the gutter) It was spicy and smokey and the mustard was perfect with it. The bread reminded me of this mexican bread called a "bollio". I get them from Arandas bakery and every time they bring out a fresh baked batch people fight over them like they're filled with money.

Well there you have it my fellow food truck foodies- 6 food trucks in 2 days.

I enjoyed my food from all the food trucks and I can't wait to go back! Just maybe not all in one day again.

Taking a break

Hello my food truck foodies!

I've been quiet on the blog posts this past week but I'm going to fully explain why.  I am taking a break from reviewing food trucks. I haven't been feeling well for a few weeks and my doctor has put me on a strict diet. I wasn't even suppose to review The Stick It Truck but I couldn't resist one last review. I hope my doctor doesn't read this. Anyways, I have been given a list of food not to eat.

NO:

  • Tomatoes
  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • Chocolate
  • Citrus
  • Spicy food
  • Fatty food
  • Acidic food
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Soda
Basically I can't eat anything good LOL. I have no idea what I'm going to do without garlic. How is food suppose to taste good?

Anyways, I hope to be back to reviewing in a few weeks. I'll still going to be tweeting and supporting my food trucks anyway I can. I'm sorry for having to take a break and I hope to visit more food trucks soon.

Stick It Food Truck

Did y'all know what there's a food holiday every single day of the year? For example, today is "National Lemon Chiffon Cake Day" and tomorrow is "National Turkey Neck Soup Day". I think I'd rather celebrate cake than turkey necks.

Yesterday, was "Something on a Stick Day" and what better way to have a belated celebration of this day than stopping by Stick It Food Truck!

Stick It Food Truck specializes in, you guessed it, food on sticks!

Today, Stick It set up shop at Soundwaves on Montrose. My GPS took me down very sketchy backstreets and alleys. I thought I was about to get carjacked but all of a sudden the streets opened up and there was the truck!

There wasn't a line because it is a pretty rainy, gray day here in Houston but no line means faster food for me! I walked up to the food truck and as soon a read the menu I had a huge dilemma- I wanted to order everything.

You see my dilemma? Skirt steak, teriyaki chicken, pork belly...how is a girl to choose? I decided on the marinated skirt steak with southwest couscous salad with chimichurri and avocado. It only took about 6 minutes for my food to be ready. That's the beauty of grilling food on a stick, it's fast!

The skirt steak went so well with the chimichurri sauce. I have a deep love for chimichurri. I remember the first time I had it I was at Churassco's with plantain chips and I could not get enough of it. I think that's part of the reason why I chose to order this. I cannot begin to tell you how good this skirt steak is. I could eat 10 sticks of this with chimichurri. Spicy, garlicky, tangy-This skirt steak had a lot going on and it was delicious.

If you order the skirt steak these are my instructions- Dip, devour, repeat. I didn't finish the chimichurri but trust me, it's in my fridge right now and I will find an excuse to eat it for dinner tonight.

The side dish for the skirt steak was a wonderful couscous salad. I've only had regular  couscous so being able to try Israeli couscous was a treat!

The couscous salad had roasted corn, avocado and roasted red peppers. *SIGH* Red peppers. Readers I have a confession, I HATE bell peppers. Actually "hate" is an understatement. I absolutely detest bell peppers. I don't care if it's green, yellow, orange or red. I'd rather sit through a 24 hour Hannah Montana marathon than eat a dish with red peppers.

With that being said I am completely biased with this salad. I loved everything else about it. The sweet corn, creamy avocado and nutty couscous were perfect minus the red pepper. If you like roasted peppers than you will love this salad. I liked it despite the red peppers.

Food on sticks is not only fun but it's convenient. How great is it to be able to walk about and be eating at the same time? That my friends is multi-tasking at it's best. Stick It Food Truck has an eclectic menu that has something for everyone. Go try Stick It Food Truck and show them some food truck love.

Good Dog Hot Dog

You know what's better than a birthday cake? A birthday hot dog!

Today is Good Dog Hot Dogs 1st birthday-a HUGE accomplishment for any food establishment. Good Dog Hot Dogs provides the tastiest hot dogs all around Houston. All condiments are made from scratch - the hot dogs are Texas made and they are all served in their local artisan buns. How good does that sound?

I made my way to Buchanan's Native Plants in the Heights where Good Dog Hot Dogs sets up almost every Sunday afternoon. It was a mad house in the parking lot when I arrived. You'd think the plant shop was giving away money trees. After I battled it out in the parking lot, I made my way to the little blue bus inside the nursery.

I had already decided what I was going to order before I even arrived. I knew I wanted the chillin' dog with chorizo chili, onion and jalapenos. I cannot have a hot dog without chili. The Texan in me won't allow it.

The homemade condiments have a little something for everyone.  Everything from Sriracha Ketchup and Roasted Garlic Aioli to Short Bus Mustard and Jalapeno Relish. I wish that they served fries just so I can dip them in the Roasted Garlic Aioli, Belgian style.  You can make your own "Good Dog" or you can pick one of the specialty hotdogs already made like the "Guac-a-dog" with avocado, tomato and jalapeno or the "Chi-town Dog" which has everything but the kitchen sink on it.  After placing the order, I walked to a seat with some of the other customers waiting for their food. It was a beautiful location.

The area around the bus has plenty of chairs and benches to enjoy the food. It was a perfect location for a beautiful Houston summer. As my partner in crime and I were waiting for our food, I was telling him about the food truck and that they made homemade chips. HOMEMADE CHIPS!  Why didn't we order those is a mystery to me. I ran up to the counter and asked to add them to my order and I had perfect timing. He was just about to call my order.

He handed me the bag of salt and pepper chips, the chillin' dog and the corny dog on a red tray and I made my way to the table. I love the presentation of the hot dogs in the white boxes. Everything looks better against a white background and pictures are so much easier to take against it. Good job Good Dog Hot Dog!

In my opinion, it's really hard to make a good homemade potato chip. You have to get the thickness just right. Not too thin so they don't burn and not too thick so they're not soft in the middle. Goldilocks would be proud of these chips, they were just right. Seasoned with salt and pepper, these chips are simplicity at its best.

The corny dog is one of the biggest corn dogs I've ever seen in my life. You get your $5's worth. It is served with Short bus mustard and Sriracha ketchup. The ratio of batter to hot dog was just right and the mustard and ketchup were amazing. The mustard was slightly spicy and tangy. The ketchup was sweet and spicy. I think I'm going to have to steal this idea and keep a bottle of this in my house. :)

My chillin dog was served with beef and chorizo chili, pickled jalapenos, diced onion and short bus mustard. As soon as I saw that this chili had chorizo in it I was sold. Here in Texas chili is a religion. Oh and don't even THINK about putting beans in Texas chili. That will get you shipped out to somewhere terrible up north.  It's our state dish so if you do it you better do it right or don't do it at all.  Good Dog Hot Dog does it right. Oh and the bun...ahhh the artisan bun. The bun was buttered and toasted so it gave you a little but of crunch when you bit into the hot dog. That bun and the Texas made hot dog are what really separate this hot dog from plain old grocery store hot dogs.  I'll never be able to eat Oscar Meyer again.

The sign of a good meal is the aftermath left behind.  A messy chili dog is the only way it's suppose to be.  My mouth and fingers were covered in chili and I had no shame.  I don't think anyone was watching me lick my fingers but if they did they could tell I enjoyed myself.

The next time you're craving a hotdog don't go to your fridge and pull out the processed hot dogs.  Check out Good Dog Hot dog for the freshest, tastiest selection of hot dogs in Houston.  You'll be glad you did.
